Masindi District has received a climate smart intervention project worth USD 30,000 from the Midwestern Region Center for Democracy and Human Rights aimed at addressing the growing effects of climate change in the district.
The project, dubbed "Strengthening Vulnerable Communities' Participation in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Bunyoro Sub-Region,"will be implemented in Masindi, Buliisa, and Kiryandongo districts in partnership with Rotarians.
Speaking during an inception meeting held at the district headquarters,MICOD Programs Officer Elly Kiirya said the organization, together with Rotary partners, secured the funding to support vulnerable communities affected by climate related challenges.
Kiirya explained that in Masindi District, the project will specifically be implemented in Labongo Sub-County for a period of 12 months running from March 2026 to March 2027.
He noted that the intervention seeks to address rapid deforestation, estimated at about 92,000 hectares annually across the region as well as heavy dependence on firewood, prolonged droughts, floods, food insecurity, and limited access to clean energy.
According to Kiirya, the project targets increasing access to clean energy among 300 households, creating climate change awareness among more than 1,300 residents, and promoting conservation practices to at least 300 households in the beneficiary communities.
Speaking during the meeting, Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Musa Kyamiza, welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely given the district's limited budget to address climate related challenges.
Kyamiza pledged the district's support towards successful implementation of the project.
